A VR experiment
Space Challenge was developed as part of experimentation in Recursive Realities. It was an early VR prototype utilizing the Oculus Rift DK1. The user is in control of a propulsion system, navigating around a stylized space station near earth. This disorienting movement was (and continues to be) discouraged in VR, as it tends to invite motion sickness. However we were convinced we could find a “sweet-spot” as we tested the limits of “pleasant” disorientation.
“Our methodology was to handle it much like a toy.”
Rather than considering objectives and mechanics, we chose to iterate around the experience. People would simply go to our space. The rings were later added as a means of fostering play with our movement mechanic.
